FASHION vs PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

What is the difference between fashion and portrait photograpy?
A fashion photograph is used for the fashion world that only reflects what the model is wearing, how their make-up is presented, how their hair is portrayed. Basically, everything on the outside that can be seen is taken. On the otherhand, a portrait photograph is looking behind their appearence.

To what degree should an image be manipulated to go into a fashion magazine?
Examples taken from Google Images about Photo manipulation.

Made to look slender, skin more sheek and overall better.

Comparing the girl before and after makeup, hair, and digital manipulation.
This makes a huge impact on the viewers/readers self-esteem as there are teenagers and young adults who envy 'models' and will do anything to have the look that they do. It brings a false hope that the Dove product they are advertising will make you look prettier

The ad begins with a woman walking into a photo shoot. From there, she is primped and plucked by hair and makeup artists, then tweaked on aPhotoshop-like program. The photo-manipulation is then posted on a billboard for the fictional "Easel Foundation Makeup" brand. Two young, teenage girls walk past, glancing at the board. "No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted" ends the ad in text, "Every girl deserves to feel beautiful just the way she is."

The view against Photo-Manipulation

-Photoshopping and manipulating photos has become such a regular occurrence that we often see many misleading images on a daily basis without questioning them. Before computers, photo manipulation was achieved by retouching with ink, paint, double-exposure, piecing photos or negatives together in the darkroom, or scratching Polaroids. -Technology has changed and allowed the alterations to become much easier and significantly more complex all while giving amateurs the ability to alter their personal photos.
-Issues that have risen with the increased use of photoshop, are seen to occur mostly in journalism and advertisment. These have placed an immense amount of pressure on young females to achieve the look of the technologically altered ideal of women.

The views supporting Photo-Manipulation

-Photoshop has proven to be beneficial to the cost-effectivness of the beauty industry. Companies are known to invest millions of dollars on advertising to help promote their products and as a result there is an increase of sales.
-Companies knowingly exploit women, through advertising, to make women feel that they need the product be to happier.
-As well this technology allows the average individual to alter their own images at home without the use of a dark room or advanced knowledge of photography. Allowing the individual to create beautiful images of ones wedding or even their university graduation.
